. >>> in a few hours, people here in newtown, connecticut, will head to church services to seek comfort and mourn the loss of so many of their loved ones. their friends, family members and many people they have known for so many years. we now know 12 girls and 8 boys were shot to death inside sandy hook elementary school. all of them were either 6 or 7 years old. among them, was emily parker. her father says she could light up a room and was an exceptional artist who always carried around markers and pencils to draw for anyone. her dad said he dwav her a kiss the last time he saw her alive. six adults lost their lives in that tragic shooting. that includes 47-year-old principal dawn hochsprung who was married and had two daughters and three st stepdaughters. one parent said hochsprung was always smiling. and school sipsychologist mary sherlach loved to garden. they will miss her terribly and take comfort knowing she had achieved that dream. the gunman also took the life of a 27-year-old first grade teacher who is being hailed around the world for her bravery. ♪ amazing grace how sweet the sound

mourns, investigators are still trying to figure out what motivated adam lanza to go on a shooting spree and kill children and take the life of his own mother. we'll have more in a moment. the truth is we may never know why adam lanza may choose to go on a mass killing spree, why he may choose to go into a school and kill innocent 6 and 7-year-olds. we are learning a lot more about his mother nancy and the relationship she had with her troubled son. according to friends the 52-year-old divorced mother was two was devoted to her children and especially close with adam who friends say was very intelligent and socially awkward. a retired stockbroker, nancy lanza was a lifelong red sox fan with season tickets who lived with her son adam in a large colonial home and friends say she was a little contradiction, extremely generous and friendly yet extremely private when it came to her family life. they say she did talk about the challenges she faced raising a son with as pergers syndrome and her friends say she thought she may soon be leaving newtown. >> she was talking about washington state an

have to be in mourning and pray for the families and then a couple days go by, the emotion goes by and nobody cares to talk about it. so you're right. when is the time? there's no good time. no better time than the present, i think, to have at least have the discussion of what is reasonable for the number of firearms that are at large in society and not to mention that we still have the issue of the very inadequate mental health system in this country. so if you're a parent and have a child that is growing up with problems and you can see that they have some type of a brain disorder or mental issue, there's not much that you can do about it. there's not much help that society gives a family or law enforcement or doctors to deal with mentally disturbed individuals and then combine that with the number of weapons at large and we have disaster after disaster. we're all upset, shocked and outraged. a couple days go by and nothing changes. >> well, listen, i think you're right about that when it comes to the mental health issue. here's the thing. if someone has a mental health proble

and that was our last conversation. and then being the wife of such a public man, my morning cou ii mourning could not stay private and i understand that. and i had to plan a memorial that was worthy of such a public man, and that imposed its own stresses. but at the same time, it was a balm, reassuring to me to have discovered that richard had touched so many lives around the world and letters kept pouring in and i red each one. but in reading those letters, decided that i really couldn't stay in our home and in our city of new york if i wanted to get on with my life and that's when it took me to paris. paris is at the heart of this love story because for whatever reason every happy moment in high life seems to have taken place in paris. >> you say in the book what was i if not part of a couple. you are no longer part of mrs. richard holbrooke. >> i don't think i would have discovered really who i am and my strength if i can say that if i had just sailed through life as mrs. holbrooke. >> kati, what do you hope readers will get from this book? >> that there is life after loss. here's the lesson.

write, we cannot imagine our life without her. we are mourning our loss, sharing our beautiful memories we have of her, trying to help her brother travis understand why he can't play with his best friend. we are devastated. two more little children laid to rest. one thing that we've been doing here is really trying to keep focus on the lives that have been lost. we're not focusing on the killer, he's gone, and frankly, we don't want him to be remembered. certainly not by name. we tried to be careful of what the families are going through. after sunday night's program, we got a call from the mcdonnell family. 7-year-old grace mcdonnell's family. i spoke with graces parents chris and lynn at length. they told me who grace was. the light of their family. a little girl who loved school, her brother jack. a talented artist that lived life to the fullest. made the most of every day. as amazed the strength that grace's parents showed they say it's grace who is guiding them through these difficult days. here's our conversation. tonight, we honor grace, we will remember her. what do you want peo

there was a large ceremony to mourn the victims lost. we're awaiting a news conference here at 8:00 a.m. eastern time in connecticut where authorities are expected to release the names of the children and adults killed at the sandy hook elementary school. 26 people killed there, 20 children, 6 adults, the mother of the victim also found dead at a separate location. i want to check in now with nick valencia in the cnn newsroom. one of them, the school principal. nick, what do we know about her? >> good morning, john. as you mentioned, i'm here at the cnn center in atlanta where we're working on gathering the latest information on the victims of this horrible tragedy, the connecticut school shooting. as you mentioned, 47-year-old principal dawn hochsprung, described as the kind of person you would want educating your kids, john. she was a very involved educator with memorable enthusiasm according to those that knew her. she spent her entire career rising through the ranks of the connecticut school system, teaching in small communities where she was a fixture in schools before coming to sandy hook.

have to think not just from the ptsd side of things, these families are mourning. and they're dealing with grief. and we have to make sure that the services we provide address those grief issues. and that sometimes because of their experiences they may not be able to be grieving or mourning right now. that because of what they saw and they experienced, the trauma piece of it is getting in the way. so we need to make sure our services are providing both the trauma and the grief support. >> i know the conventional, the instinctive image, the instinct is, dr. brimer, is for parents not to break down, start showing really deep emotions in front of the kids, because the kids will start to get scared. is that smart, though? should the parents try to avoid that? >> there is no way that parents are going to avoid what their feelings are. and they are going to express just how awful and how tragic this has been. but it is also important that parents get support from other adults in their lives. whether it is clergy or other loved ones that can support them in a much more way that they can't ge

of people all over the world are mourning for the people who were killed in connecticut. but there's a certain group of people in this country, a very small group, fortunately, that can associate in a way that most of us cannot imagine. these are people who know what it's like to be at school when a typical day turns into carnage. some of them are survivors of the columbine massacre 14 years ago, some of whom are now parents themselves. i spoke with one who's now a mom, casey johnson. >> you lose the sense that things could never happen to you. so many parents would say, this would never happen at my child's school. for me as a parent of a child, i believe this could easily happen at my child's school because that's because it has happened to me before. i would hope that the people involved will walk beside these children and the families for the years to come. they have years and years of healing that they're going to be facing. and i hope that we can come beside them and encourage them and focus positively on the lives of the ones that were lost. >> i want you to meet shawn grave

for this to be a day of mourning, we can't understand what these families are going through, but we want to stand near them. president obama will also observe the moment of silence, and governors from at least 28 states have asked all of their residents to do the same. john, we'll bring that moment live on cnn, but the president has shifted to focus additionally on gun control in this country. that debate raging in the wake of this tragedy. the white house releasing a video from the president, just this morning. the president acknowledging that he is a supporter of the second amendment, the right to bear arms, saying that most gun owners are indeed responsible. but also making very clear where he draws the line. >> here is what i think we should do. this week, i called on congress to take up and pass common sense legislation, that has the support of the majority of the american people, including banning the sale of the military saul style weapons and making sure criminals can't take advantage of legal loopholes to get their hands on a gun. >> that debate will rage on. we're expecting to hear from the

asked a local church leader how he helps the people in mourning. >> what can you really say? many of them just said to me, thank you for being here with us. we pray together, we hugged each other there, were a lot of tears. certainly a lot of emotion. and it has not really settled into their lives that their child has been taken from them. i must say for the parents i spoke with today there was a tremendous amount of love for these children. and i know the days ahead are going to be very difficult and we as a community, certainly as a church community, will be present to them. but the words, what can you say at a time like this? >> there are probably a lot of parents wrestling around the country and around the world right now with what are they going the say to their children who ask them questions about this? what will you recommend for people to say to their kids, not kids from newtown who were at the school, but just who hear about this and want to know, are they safe about what happened? >> i think that's the one thing you have to ensure them about. some circumstances are beyo

me tell you everything that we know at this hour right now. as newtown mourns, police say they have identified all 20 children and six adulted killed at the school. they told us that the shooter forced his way into the school. and we just got this picture of him from our affiliate wfsb. and we just found out from a law enforcement official were that the suspect had some sort of altercation with people at the school just a few days before the killings. police say the suspect first shot and killed his mother, nancy, at her home before driving to the school and then opening fire. authorities tell us that they're making good progress in determining why this horrific crime happened. >> our investigators at the crime scene, the school and secondarily at the secondary crime scene that we discussed where the female was located deceased did produce some very -- a very good evidence in this investigation that our investigators will be able to use and hopefully painting the complete picture as to how and more importantly why this occurred. >> so tell you right now, police are also saying that

and basically saved our lives. we debriefed extensively. we mourned. you know you mourn those that you lost. and you sort of then move on. but it's always with you. the anniversary's january 27, i remember it like it was yesterday. happened in 2004. richard's seen a lot of stuff in his career. something different, as it was with the ambush, certainly for me, it was personal. i had been in a bunch of firefight. these guys were trying to kill us, that's a personal thing. these guys were kidnapping them and they didn't know what was happening. it's different to being an observer. they're going to have to work through some of this. i'm glad that they're okay. it was worrying when we knew they were missing. >> what gave you the strength to go back out there after you experienced so much and seeing your colleagues gunned down? >> for me personally. >> yes. >> it was respect for our local staff. i didn't want to be the westerner who something bad happened and i ran away. i was back in six months because i wanted to go back and a sign of respect and solidarity. that's just for me. everybody's diffe

's a very, very difficult time, and everybody is still very much in mourning. wherever you go in this town, you can see signs of what has taken place not just in the center where you see the memorials but elsewhere. when you go and get a coffee, there are people dressed in mourning clothes coming from a funeral. when you drive the streets, you can see police cars that have been positioned in front of homes. four people today are buried, one of them the teacher lauren rosseau and her family is saying good buy. also three stints, allison wyatt, benjamin wheeler and katherine hubbard. they'll all be laid to rest today. they're roughly the same age as the gunman when he moved here and when he began his career at sandy hook lelementary school. there's a direct connection there. those children, however, everybody everywhere you go everyone is on the verge of tears. it will take a long time until everyone here gets over what has happened, if, in fact, that's even possible, suzanne. >> you're standing outside of the home of gunman. what are investigators looking for? what's the latest? >> reporter
